Experiences make memories. Whether you're after adventure or relaxation this autumn, be inspired with our selection of the best experiences that Moonfleet and Dorset have to offer.
Head to the seaside
We are lucky that there are many beautiful beaches on the Dorset coast. If you head into Weymouth you will find the traditional seaside beach – with around 3 miles of sandy beach you will be able to pick a nice spot to enjoy, make sure you pickup a bucket and spade from hotel to build your sandcastle! If you aren’t after sand then perhaps head to Chesil Beach – you can head to the visitor centre on Portland or to Abbotsbury to get onto the beach.
Our Reception team can provide a list of beaches close to the hotel, or a little further afield, for you to explore.
We’re proud supporters of the South West Coast Path, you can access it at the bottom of our garden. You can head west to Abbotsbury or east to Portland. Autumn walks along the edge of the Fleet Lagoon will allow you to enjoy beautiful views of Chesil beach and you may also spot some wildlife along the way.
A short drive from the hotel you will find Hardy’s Monument. Whilst this National Trust monument is currently closed, the car park is open and from there you can take a walk in the rolling hills of the Dorset countryside. There are number of routes sign posted from the car park.
On the water
A must whilst you are on holiday in Weymouth. Grab our crab lines, nets, buckets from the team in reception. Be sure to ask them advice on the best place to catch these critters (normally Weymouth Harbour is a good bet) and tell us when you are back how many you caught!
Stand Up Paddle Boarding & Kayaking
Weymouth Water sports offer hire of stand-up paddle boards and kayaks so that you can explore the beautiful coastline, all part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the Jurassic Coast.
Gardens and Nature
Abbotsbury Sub-Tropical Gardens
A short drive from the hotel you will find these 18th century gardens. With 20 acres with many exotic plants, there are formal and informal gardens, with woodland walks and walled gardens. You will also be able to take in some stunning views of the Jurassic Coast. With Autumn on it's way its a great time to visit and see the changing colours of the trees and plants.
Dorset Wildlife Trail
Our new outdoor trail around our grounds will ask you to help find some of Dorset’s favourite wildlife. You can collect a map from reception or the crèche and collect the clues along the way – make sure you return it when finished to collect your prize!
You can take a walk from the hotel along the shore line of the Fleet to see what fossils you can find. There are number of great types of fossils to be discovered including Crinoid and Goniorynchia boueti. During school holidays in October 2020 Andrew’s guided walks will continue , when the tides are favourable. He is happy to give advice for those who want to head out adventuring on their own - just be sure to check the tide times first.
